Karen Richardson is a Canadian artist who has felt the magnetic pull of stone - from mountains to boulders to pebbles to grains of sand - from as far back as she can remember.

"Perennial gardens in the North have amazing tenacity. They withstand freezing winters, hot dry summers, and stand their ground when the rocky landscape tries to take over.
In this scene from my garden, I was drawn to the contrast of bright spiky flowers against the subdued hues of the round river stones. I grew up near Algonquin Park and never tire of painting the rocks of the Canadian Shield.
This artwork is the largest watercolour I have done so far in my 37-year career, and the painting process took two months. I used Holbein paints I was awarded in the 2022 Women in Watercolor International Juried Competition. The watercolour paper is made in France, and the wood panel and frame are made in Canada."

        Karen Richardson

Born and raised near Algonquin Park, in northern Ontario, Karen was surrounded by the rugged terrain of the Canadian Shield. Since then, Karen's adventures have taken her through beautiful wilderness scenery, filled with pristine lakes, vivid skies, massive trees, and sturdy rock. Having experienced these gorgeous landscapes in person, her passion is to capture them in my paintings so people can reconnect with nature's awe-inspiring beauty, within their own homes.

        Captivating Watercolours

"I want people to feel utterly captivated by my paintings of wondrously untamed places that capture our hearts and ignite our imagination. Whatever the source of my inspiration, I strive to share in my paintings the quiet moments of heartfelt awe and wonder that I feel in Nature. I use true-to-life colours, crisp detail, and dramatic lighting effects, to give the sense of ‘being there'.

If my paintings make you pause, take a slow breath, and smile, I know I have accomplished my artistic mission: to make the world a happier place… one painting at a time."
